Occupancy study: discover how restaurants filled up in 2022

Studying diner behavior and the latest trends in the restaurant industry is essential. Having all the data at your fingertips helps you make better decisions and be more precise in your actions.

Delectatech keeps this in mind, and thanks to its award-winning Artificial Intelligence engine and a vast census obtained through the latest Big Data technologies, it has compiled all the data into a new study.

Which types of restaurants grew the most in 2022? Which neighborhoods in Barcelona saw the biggest increase in restaurant occupancy? And in Madrid? We tell you all this below.

These are the restaurants that grew the most in 2022

Although this period faced various economic challenges, such as inflation and supply shortages, restaurant consumption trends show the opposite. In fact, restaurants with an average price of over 50 euros per person are the ones that saw the highest occupancy increase in 2022.

To carry out this study, Delectatech relied on a large census of 144,000 different establishments from various areas and types. If we look at the third quarter of the year, there was a 2.51% increase compared to the same period in 2021.

The cheapest restaurants, with prices below 20 euros per person, saw only a marginal increase in occupancy, just 0.38%. Mid-priced restaurants saw a slightly higher increase, reaching 1.35%.

Looking at the overall data for 2022, again it is the higher-priced restaurants that maintained growth. In 2021, these establishments had an average occupancy of 34.93%. In 2022, this figure rose to 38.71%. This is an impressive increase of almost four points, highlighting the strong performance of this specific segment of the sector.

Which neighborhoods in Barcelona have the highest restaurant occupancy?

At Delectatech, we focused on the two main urban and commercial centers to draw conclusions about restaurant occupancy. First, Barcelona, the Catalan capital, where a total of 7,753 establishments were studied.

The data is clear. The neighborhoods that benefited most from the overall increase in restaurant occupancy are La Barceloneta and the southern coast. These results come from comparing the third quarter of 2022 with the same period in 2021.

Other areas in Barcelona that experienced a significant increase in their average occupancy rate are Barri Gòtic, Ciutat Vella, Passeig de Gràcia, Rambla Catalunya, and El Poblenou. Neighborhoods that saw a decrease in occupancy include El Clot, the Sants-Montjuïc district, and Zona Franca.

Analyzing the data, the conclusion is clear: the neighborhoods that grew the most are tourist areas and located in the city center. Meanwhile, the neighborhoods with reduced occupancy are in more residential areas. This is largely due to the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions and the increased influx of tourists and Barcelona residents to areas of greater social activity. Logically, a similar trend is expected in the coming years.

Here’s how the data looks in Madrid

As expected, our analysis of occupancy trends in the capital was included. The data analyzed by Delectatech comes from a total of 9,889 establishments across different neighborhoods and types.

The results show that the greatest increase in occupancy occurred in restaurants in the central area, especially around the Royal Palace. This area is one of the most visited by tourists.

Meanwhile, as in Barcelona, the less central neighborhoods such as Usera, Canillejas, and San Blas have seen their occupancy decrease compared to the third quarter of 2021. In absolute terms for the entire year, the Salamanca district had the highest occupancy, with an average of 40.63%.
